MUSKEGON HEIGHTS (WKZO) -- The Muskegon Height’s Police Department is under investigation for its sloppy handling of evidence, some of which may be missing. The Acting Chief of the Muskegon Heights Police Department has asked state troopers to do an independent audit of their evidence locker because it appears some money has disappeared.

Prosecutor Tony Tague says the evidence room is a shambles with poor organization and poor record keeping. He says unlike most departments that destroy drugs and remove cash when cases are prosecuted, there it was left lying around.

Interim Chief Ron Rake requested the audit and then resigned. State Police Lt. Kurt Schram says obviously there is restricted access to the evidence locker, so it was probably an employee of the department. He says they have a lot of paperwork to go through. They may find some other things have turned up missing as well. It’s not clear if any past or ongoing criminal prosecutions have been jeopardized by the missing evidence.
