WHITE PIGEON (WKZO) -- A shootout with police was short and violent, but will generate a lot of paperwork. Six police officers involved in a deadly gunfight outside of a White Pigeon bar, have been put on administrative leave, while a determination is made whether or not the shooting death of a local man was justifiable.
Forty-two year old Aaron McCausland of Constantine had been bar hopping and pulled out a shotgun when one of the bars denied service. Police were called and a high speed chase led them to the White Pigeon Inn, where the man parked the pick-up.
With police cruisers surrounding him, he took two shots at the police. They returned fire and he was killed. St. Joseph County Sheriff Bradley Balk says it appears to be a legal use of deadly force, but it will be reviewed as a matter of policy.
