The streaking Red Wings last night improved their chances of making the playoffs as they stopped the visiting St. Louis Blues 4-to-2 for their sixth win in seven games. Valtteri Filppula netted a pair of third period goals helping Detroit pad its lead to four points over Calgary for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth.
The Red Wings are also now within four points of being tied for fifth place. Filppula broke a 2-2 tie and sealed the deal with an empty-netter for Detroit, which got 30 saves from Jimmy Howard. Henrik Zetterberg and Todd Bertuzzi each split the pipes in the second period for the Red Wings.
Tomorrow night, Detroit hosts Minnesota. Last night in the ECHL at Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo scored a 5-to-4 overtime victory against Elmira.
