KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo’s Geek Group may know a lot about quantum mechanics and particle physics but the intricacies of the tax code has left them stumped. Founder Chris Boden says they have been given two weeks to pay 100-thousand dollars in taxes that they thought they didn’t have to pay on their North Burdick facility. The unique learning workshop says they do for technology what the Nature Center does for the natural world, and deserve the same tax free status.
This week’s appeal to the township tax board is on YouTube. In it Boden tells the panel that they are a 501c3 charitable organization, and that the IRS considers them to be non-profit. He told the board there is no way they could raise the money to pay it. The Tax appeals board says it will notify them in three weeks whether they are truly exempt, or out of business.
