KALAMAZOO--West Main, a major artery in and out of the west side of Kalamazoo, will be closed between Nichols and Drake until further notice. A private contractor was digging where he wasn’t supposed to and struck a 10-inch water main, sending a column of water into the air earlier this afternoon and undermining the road surface.
Traffic is being detoured onto Grand Prairie.
City crews are assessing the damage; it can take a day or two to permanently fix one of these pipelines and replace the washed out roadway over it.
