KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The west Side apartments have been a hot spot for muggings. Early yesterday morning a thief picked the wrong victim, and was shot when he tried to rob a Public Safety Officer at Drakes Pond. Chief Jeff Hadley says the officer was just defending himself.

Officer Derrick Turner, a 3rd year officer with Public Safety, was accessing his trunk when he was rapidly approached by an armed black male. In a split second decision, Turner fired a single round, hitting the suspect in the left calf. The 19-year-old fled and was later apprehended after seeking treatment at Battle Creek hospital. Three suspects, including the shooter, are being held at Public Safety.

According to the Chief of Police, some of the suspects in question have matched descriptions of the suspects connected to a robbery at Rue 21 a few hours prior and they are investigating that link.
