Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Schools In Line For Federal Money

UNDATED -- President Obama has announced a 250-million dollar federal program to boost math and science education in the U.S. calling it vital to our future. WMU and GVSU and Public Schools in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Benton Harbor will all be part of a project to recruit and train high quality math and Science teachers, and then put them to work in those urban school districts.   The Kellogg Foundation is kicking in $16.7-million to fund the program in Michigan and Program Officer Quinlan Krenn says Michigan needs the help, specifically in these two subject areas, because test scores have been consistently lower than they should be. Two hundred and forty education students interested in becoming math and science teachers will get 30-thousand dollars each to help them thru college, with the stipulation that they work in those urban districts for three years.
