Ex-Detroit Mayor Stays in Legal Hot Water

(Detroit, MI)  --  The FBI reportedly has evidence former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick accepted bribes while in office.  The "Detroit Free Press" reports a contractor claims to have paid several hundred-thousand dollars to Kilpatrick's father and several thousands to an aide to the former mayor.  Karl Kado allegedly paid Kilpatrick 20-thousand dollars on four or five occasions.  He is awaiting sentencing for paying bribes in order to protect Cobo Center contracts.  The FBI is trying to prove Kilpatrick and others used the mayor's office criminally to fatten their own wallets.

Meanwhile, Kilpatrick could be served with a probation-violation warrant as early as Monday for failing to make a 79-thousand-dollar payment on his one-million-dollar restitution.  Kilpatrick paid only 14-thousand dollars Friday, far short of the full payment required by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner.  Groner earlier told Kilpatrick he faced going back to jail if the full payment wasn't made.  Kilpatrick claims he doesn't have enough to pay the entire 79-thousand-dollar payment.
