Great Lakes Governors Unhappy with Asian Carp Summit

LANSING -- An Obama administration plan to prevent invasive Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes is not being welcomed by the region's governors.  The group criticized the 78-million-dollar proposal to partially close the locks leading to the Great Lakes as not going far enough.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm emerged from a White House meeting on the carp problem, saying the governors "strongly urged" the government to close the locks.  Granholm said the closure would give experts a chance to get a handle on the problem and come up with a more permanent solution.

Great Lakes governors are worried that Bighead and Silver carp could wipe out a seven-billion-dollar fishing industry.  Last month the Supreme Court denied a request by Michigan, Wisconsin and other states in the region to order a complete shutdown of the locks and dams that connect to the Great Lakes.

Michigan refiled its request last week after carp DNA was discovered in a Lake Michigan harbor.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to make a recommendation by early March on what to do next.
