Western Michigan’s huge second half rally fell short last night in overtime as the Broncos were beaten 102-to-99 by Troy in the opening round of the 3-day World Vision Invitational in Logan, Utah. The Broncos trailed by 25 points with 15 minutes left in regulation and by 10 points with 5 minutes remaining on the clock before eventually forcing overtime.
Troy snapped Western’s four-game winning streak as the Broncos slip to 5-and-5. Freshman Juwan Howard, Jr. had a team and career-high 25 points for the Broncos. He’s the son of NBA veteran and University of Michigan Fab Five member Juwan Howard. WMU has a second round game tonight against Utah State.
Also tonight in college hoops, 12th-ranked Michigan State plays at home against number-22 Texas. Last night’s Top-25 action included second-ranked Ohio State cruising to a 96-to-49 win at home over UNC-Asheville as the Buckeyes improved to 11-and-0.
Meanwhile, Oakland University lost to Valparaiso 103-to-102 in the title game of a tournament hosted by Oakland. In the third place game, Eastern Michigan beat Rochester 82-to-63.
