KALAMAZOO (WKZO) - More information has come to light as to how Captain William Hamman's 18 years posing as a cardiologist while he flew jets for United Airlines was discovered.
He was unmasked by someone at William Beaumont Hospital last summer and the subject of an internal investigation at Western Michigan University this past October. Hamman was terminated from the research project he was working on at the Aviation School in Battle Creek.
"We looked very carefully, and his lack of medical degree or PhD really doesn't impact the outcome of the research," according to WMU spokesperson Cheryl Roland, who said the research project continues.
United Airlines apparently fired him, too, after they learned what he was allegedly doing - despite the fact Hamman's pilot credentials are legitimate.
Apparently the institutions that were buffaloed by Captain Hamman would have preferred that his ruse remained a secret. His case wasn't revealed until the Associate Press caught wind of it this week, and apparently none of them have filed criminal complaints against him.
