UNDATED (WKZO) – All that sunshine and warmth has a downside. Michigan is a tinderbox and today may be the worst day of the season for wild fires statewide. The state will be under a ‘fire weather watch’ this afternoon and evening and it may be extended depending on the weather.
It’s not a perfect storm but the combination of the milder winter, the dry spring and the breezy warmer weather has created near perfect conditions for grass fires. State Fire Marshal Spokesperson Paul Kollmeyer says unlike previous years, it’s the whole state burning at once.
He says their resources are so stretched that even he has been pressed into service fighting fires. He says they have seen ten times as many fires this year as last, it’s arrived early and may go on for several weeks…depending on the weather.
