MATTAWAN -- Animal rights groups around the nation are planning protests this afternoon at research labs. They will specifically be protesting the use of primates to test products and new drugs.
The Kalamazoo Animal Rights League plans to demonstrate outside the
MPI Plant in Mattawan this afternoon. They claim the monkeys are treated badly, that there is a lot of violence, and that they often suffer from diseases that should invalidate the research.
Recent studies in Great Britain show that research into the neurosciences and infectious diseases can only be done using primates because of their genetic similarities to man, but the also recommends that their use in other kinds of research should be reduced.
