OSHTEMO -- A Mattawan man is facing charges in the bust of a meth lab that may have endangered children. Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 5400 block of West Michigan Avenue Thursday to make contact with a man believed to be in violation of his current bond for operating a meth lab.
On finding the 38-year-old, they discovered an active meth lab in a bedroom where two children, ages 2 and 8, were sleeping. The Oshtemo Fire Department helped dismantle the lab. Child Protective Services were called to take the children to the hospital for screening because exposure to the hazardous byproducts of meth manufacturing can be extremely dangerous.
The suspect has been lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail for both the initial meth lab charge and new charges of operating a meth lab and child endangerment.
