APPLETON (WRN) - A state appeals court said it was okay to send an Appleton man to jail for a year, after he hung his dog from his garage rafters with a choke chain. 36-year-old Eric Shattuck was only expecting to get 6 months in jail, after he struck a plea deal with prosecutors. But Outagamie County Circuit Judge Mitchell Metropulos extended the sentence to a year, saying it more accurately reflected the seriousness of the crime. The judge also said the sentence for felony animal mistreatment was not excessive. Shattuck disagreed and appealed, but the 3rd District Appellate Court in Wausau sided with the judge today. Prosecutors said Shattuck tried to kill his dog with antifreeze in 2007, but the dog Swiper refused to drink it. Shattuck got so upset by that, he took the dog to his garage and hung it to the rafters.
