LUDINGTON --A Norwegian Developer wants to put 100 to 200 wind turbines, 2 to 4 miles off the Lake Michigan shoreline off Mason and Oceana County.
The 300 foot tall towers would create a 100 megawatt wind farm that would cover 100 square miles. To the surprise and dismay of many who attended a presentation last night in Ludington…the towers would be visible from shore.
Scandia Offshore Wind was seeking public opinion and got mostly negative reactions. Some said the ruined view would hurt tourism and property values. But others said the economically depressed area could use the jobs the 3-billion dollar project would create.
The group has a long way to go and a lot of county, state and federal permits to obtain before they would start building. Right now they are trying to assess if it’s worth pursuing at all.
They had originally considered putting them off the shore from Holland, but determined that might be even more challenging.
