Perhaps more than any other time of year, during the holidays we turn our attention to others less fortunate and look for ways to give back. In the listings on this page, you’ll find ways to help in your community, whether it be a donation of money or time. There are also links that you can bookmark, should you feel like volunteering year round.
Guide families through the Christmas Toy Shop—where Santa and Christ meet! Shoppers will help families pick out Christmas gifts for their children, spreading the joy of Christmas through one-on-one contact with families.
Must be able to lift 15lbs, stand for 3–4 hrs. May not be a recipient of holiday assistance through The Salvation Army. Hours: Dec 18–20, 2012, 9am–Noon or 1–4pm. Evening hours might be available. Minimum age: 18. http://tsakalamazoo.org/
Volunteers are needed to assist with the Food Drive that will be Fri, Dec 21 and Sat, Dec 22, 2012. Volunteers will sort and count the donated food items on Friday from 6–8pm. Saturday, volunteers will pack the boxes beginning at 9:00am with deliveries beginning at 10:30am.
To volunteer, just go to the Kalamazoo County fairgrounds the day of the event (2900 Lake Street) at the times listed above. Food drive held in the Hazel Gray Building. Minimum age: 16, or younger with adult. http://www.kalamazooholidayfooddrive.org
New Year’s Fest is an all ages showcase of performing arts that takes place New Year’s Eve in downtown Kalamazoo. There are a variety of activities that take place including music, magic, comedy, exhibitions, fireworks, and great food! http://www.newyearsfest.com/
Join Gazelle Sports and Kalamazoo Area Runners for a festive run through the holiday lights of downtown Kalamazoo. Run Through the Lights is an untimed, non-competitive, 5K fun run and everyone is invited.
The event will be held at Gazelle Sports Kalamazoo and donations of canned food items will be donated to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Help us with a variety of tasks, multiple opportunities available. http://www.kalamazooarearunners.org
