An article by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory this week says glaciers in West Antarctica are in decline and nothing can stop them from melting into the sea. The conclusion is based on 40 years of research focusing on warming ocean waters. It doesnt say exactly when the end will come for the huge mass of ice, just that it will. On that happy note those measuring the ice sheet say it already releases almost as much ice into the ocean as does the Greenland ice sheet and it has the potential to someday raise global sea levels by four feet. It almost has the ring of Art Bell and Whitley Striebers Coming Global Superstorm about 15 years ago. Im sure it must have a more alarming impact for Pacific islanders whose real estates high point is a couple of meters above sea level. A Texas congressman last week said the climate change report was just an attempt by the government to scare us. Could be It wouldnt be the first time a government has used fear to cajole people into compliance. But it, along with this article, seems to be working a little for me.
