The trophys are different but whenever two long-time rivals step onto an athletic field it's usually entertaining. I've been to many Wisconsin-Minnesota football games over the years and I can tell you that having Paul Bunyan's ax sitting on the sideline and both teams knowing that the winning team can parade it around after a victory gives the game some added juice.
The scene will be played out again tonight as the Wausau West
Warriors and Wausau East Lumberjacks square off at Thom Field in the
annual Wausau Log Game. The Log trophy was developed by Ted Harenda and
others after Wausau High school split in two back in 1970. It started as
a fundraising effort for the Wausau chapter of AFS which sent and
brought foreign exchange students.
It soon became a focal point of the high school football season as the two schools developed a fierce rivalry in many sports.
Wausau West holds the lead in Log game victories with a record of
26-16-1 but East has won the last 2. West went an entire decade with the
Log from 1989-1999 and then East ran off 5 wins in a row and 7 out of 8
to start the 2000's.
The Warriors are a heavy favorite going into tonights game as East
has struggled on both sides of the ball this season. But I have seen Log
games before where a heavy favorite watched helplessly as the other
team raced into the north end zone at Thom Field to retrieve the Log
after an upset win.
I'll have the game live on Foxsports1390 & FM 93.9 beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30. If you cant listen live you can find the game as a podcast on foxsportswausau.com.
The two baseball championship series should be good ones. Take you pick on who will win. I can make an argument that any of the four teams could advance to the World Series. I think a Boston-Dodger series would be the most interesting.
Looking forward to the Badger-Northwestern game tomorrow. Two good teams trying to recover from losses to Ohio State. Should be a barn-burner in Madison.
