Badgers looking Good...Packers Not So Much

by Tom King

The old cliche in sports is that you don't use injuries as an excuse. I say, why not? The Green Bay Packers of yesterday bear little resemblance to the team that took the field on Opening Day. And the additions to the list yesterday reached an almost absurd level. How many teams in NFL history have lost their starting quarterbacks on the opening series two games in a row? My guess is not many. At one point in the second half the packers had no available back up offensive lineman. No Rodgers...no Cobb...no Finley...the list goes on and on and on. Its been said that to win a Super Bowl you not only have to be good...you have to be lucky...lucky enough to stay healthy...this is not that year for the Packers.

Scott Tolzien came in and played well. He had more passing yards than he had in any game at Wisconsin. He'll get the start on Sunday.

The Badger football and mens basketball team both played well in victories over the weekend. Gary Andersens team is getting some love from the national media. Both Kirk Herbstreit and Mark May have suggested the Badgers are being ignored in the national polls and are better than many teams ahead of them. hey did move up to 22th in the BCS, 17th in the media poll and 20th in the coaches poll yesterday.

Meanwhile Bo Ryan's bunch showed alot of offense the other night in a win over St. Johns. This may not be the typical Ryan team that grinds out every possession. They may look to run at times. 5 Badgers finished in double figures.

Hopefully the NCAA will look at the new rules on hand checking and defensive play under the hoop. If adjustments are not made it's going to be a parade to the free throw line and nobody wants to watch that.

Congrats to the Pointer Volleyball team and the Newman Cardinal Volleyball team. The Pointers won the WIAC Championship and now await their NCAA Tournament opponent that will be announced today.

Newman won the WIAA D-4 titlle on saturday and finished their season 30-5.
