When I was in high school, I babysat for like 500 hours @ 50 cents an hour to save up money to go to New York. The trip cost $260 for airfare, hotel and tickets to 5 or 6 shows!!!!! I remember the amount because it seemed so out of reach.
The trip was worth all the toiling. It was life altering. From Portage to New York. Broadway. WOW.
The first night we got there we saw "Chicago" with the original cast. Then we stood in Shubert Alley as all the stars poured into "The Tony Awards". That night, "A Chorus Line" won 9 Tony Awards. Guess what show we got to see the next night? Yep. It was ELECTRIC.
I think I listened to that album 1,000 times.
Marvin Hamlisch died today. He won every award there is to win and did the scores for many movies and musicals. But I'll remember him for "A Chorus Line" and for the most exciting night of my teenage life.
