Just as we're trying to process the tragedy of a 10 day old Kalamazoo baby being mauled to death by the family pit bull, we learn of another grisly attack.

37 year old State Senator Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park) is crediting his thick, winter gloves with preventing his fingers from being completely severed from his hand. While clearing his driveway on Monday, a pit bull  ( illegal in Highland Park) charged him.  He slipped while trying to escape and his left hand jammed up into the snowblower.  He cut all his fingers and broke 5 bones.

As his hand was being mangled, he kicked the dog in the face and was able to escape.

I know.  I know.  They're loving, gentle dogs.
