We have talked on "The Trifecta" about the proposal to raise money to help the the Low Income Housing Assistance Fund with a .33 mill tax. I asked for what the outcomes were for the first 1 million dollars that were spent on this program, and here is what I received from City Commissioner David Anderson: 

Here are the outcomes from the 1 million dollar investment for

There were five areas that the initial investment in the LHAF addressed.

 Prevention (keeping families in, or returning them to, housing with a one-time payment).

Assisted 146 households, including 408 individuals (223 of whom were children). Checking in one year later, 89% of this group was still housed on their own.

Rapid Re-housing and Transitional rental assistance.

Assisted 117 households, including 190 individuals (50 of whom were children). 43% of this group was able to maintain housing on their own at program end.

 Leveraging

By using this local investment as match we were able to attract $1.4 million of additional investment in permanent housing by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) in Kalamazoo County that we would not otherwise have received.

Permanent Affordable Housing

We created 23 units of Permanent affordable housing in Kalamazoo County, a mix of 11 single family homes, 11 apartment units and 1 large rooming home for women in recovery from Substance Use disorders.

Endowment

We have created an endowed fund at the Kalamazoo Community Foundation specifically to address low-income housing needs in to the future. Current balance, over $100,000

So, to wrap up;

- 1 million local dollars invested from Kalamazoo County and the Cities of Portage and Kalamazoo as well as private contributors. And the results were…

-Served 260 households, representing 600 individuals (almost half of whom were children) who received one-time or short term housing assistance.

-Received 1.4 million in additional Housing investment from sources outside the County

-Created 23 new units of permanent housing that is self sustaining

-Seeded an Housing endowment fund now valued at over $100,000
