KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The civil debate the Kalamazoo community has been having over the future of the Fountain of the Pioneers in Bronson Park turned ugly Friday when someone planted a cardboard tomahawk in the head of the Pioneer and poured blood red paint onto the statue.
Crews worked much of the day trying to remove the paint and still haven’t gotten it all off.
Public Safety is looking for the vandal or vandals who committed the assault on the public monument. Statue opponents defended defacing the statue.
The protestors picketed the statue during last night’s Holiday Celebration in Bronson Park. Most people just walked by and ignored them.I
t comes just days after the City Commission once again heard from protestors, and an equal number of citizen who forcefully argued to keep the statue as a historical reminder and a work of art.
