WMU Athletic Department asks Lunatics to clean up their act

Posted by Carolyn Binder on

The Lawson Lunatics are well-known around the college hockey world for their loud cheers and wild antics. They are what makes Lawson Ice Arena one of the most formidable places to play in college hockey. However their behavior has crossed the line, and sparked this response from the athletic department:

#Lawson Lunatics,

You are the best student section in the land, but remember you need to do so in a positive and appropriate manner.

Gestures and Language

We have received multiple complaints about your language and gestures towards the visiting teams, and especially the young children riding on the back of the Olympias during intermission. Due to the immature gestures used by you, The Lawson Lunatics, we have suspended the tradition of having young Bronco fans ride the Olympias for at least the remainder of the season.

We want you to be loud, Bronco proud and cheering FOR your Broncos. You need to do this in such a way that you are building up your Broncos, not using inappropriate language and putting down our opponents.

Make Lawson Ice Arena a place that Bronco Alumni and fans are proud to bring the young children and friends too. We want to show you off and promote you as the best student section in the land, but your behavior has to change. You are all old enough to know what is appropriate and what is not. PLEASE CLEAN IT UP!

Again, thank you for your support of our Bronco Hockey Team. Your attendance and passion is appreciated, but we need you to do so in a positive and appropriate manner.

Sincerely,

Western Michigan University Athletics
