Our week 2 match up features an early cross-town rivalry. Each brings an intriguing storyline to tonight’s game.
The Central/Norrix rivalry dates back to 1960, playing each year since Loy Norrix opened. The Maroon Giants have dominated the series (36-16-0), but Loy Norrix picked up a big win last year at Kalamazoo Central (22-12), snapping a 7-game losing streak.
Loy Norrix dropped their season opener to Portage Northern on the road (48-12). Only trailing by 8 to the Huskies at halftime, Portage Northern’s running game wore the Knights down in the second half to put the game out of reach. Loy Norrix forced turnovers in the first half, but wasn’t able to crack Northern in the second half.
How the Knight’s defense responds throughout the game to Central running back Kenyon Smith is key to their success tonight.
Kalamazoo Central shut out Battle Creek Central 20-0 in Week 1. Kenyon Smith scored all three Maroon Giant touchdowns. Relying solely on one dimension of offense might spell trouble for Kalamazoo Central, but Smith’s upside has the potential to be a big asset for them tonight.
Predictions: Carolyn – 28-21 K Central Matt – 34-14 K Central
