Letters...oh we get letters, er, replies!

by Jim McKinney

Given that I apparently cannot reply to each comment posted on this here blog...I will reply via a new post...it has been brought to my attention that, for the most part, those who have replied to my earlier blog post indicated that it is wrong for those who utilize Biblical verse/commentary to express views that might be taken as bigoted and discriminatory...my answer to that is...there is a fine line between belief and prejudice...and I do not think that we as a society have figured out how to negotiate that line without problems...I think that there are many people who believe with all their hearts that homosexuality is a sin...do so thinking that they are right because of their faith...and we as a country have always honored religious freedom...whether we agree with them or not...

So...painting those who hold that belief with a wide prejudicial brush is almost akin to what they are saying about being gay...and whether you agree or not...to attack those faith fundamentalists for what they truly understand to be true is not right, either...and we will do this dance of disagreement and finger-pointing until we can discern between belief and bigotry...

Another reply intimated that substituting "African American" for gay would eliminate the economic example and render my example moot...which is why I didn't do that...my specific point was this could and should become a free enterprise issue...if businesses discriminate...hurt them in the pocketbook...it's capitalism at it's best...and everyone involved has a stake in moving this issue along...for better or worse...

The one thing I really do enjoy is that those who read our blogs reply and argue and defend and debate...right or wrong...yes or no...America is the home of pluralism...thanks for reading and replying!
