KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Sunday is marathon day in Kalamazoo.
Nearly 9,000 runners participated in the Kalamazoo Marathon and several other Borgess “Run For the Health of It” events over the weekend last year. A similar number is expected take part this year.
The marquee events are set for Sunday. Start time is 8 a.m. for Sunday’s marathon and half-marathon. The 10K starts at 8:15 a.m. The 5K run starts at 8:25 a.m. The 5K walk starts at 8:30 a.m.
Participants can pick up packets Saturday during the Borgess Run Expo at Wings Event Center, which gets underway at 11 a.m. That event will also provide procrastinators a last chance to register for Sunday.
Veterans will be a key part of this year’s event. They’ll take part in a special “motivational mile” Friday, and will be honored in a presentation of colors before Sunday’s running events.
Race Operations Manager Cheryl Pickett said they’ll also be uniquely visible.
“This year, they’re going to have a special bib,” Pickett said. “It’s going to be red, white and blue, so they’re really going to stand out.
