Kindleberger Summerfest 5K

by Michael Louden

Last weekend was the Kindleberger Summerfest 5K in Parchment. It was cool with a little humidity and sunny for the Saturday morning run. I got their early to pick up my gear and stretch, do a warm-up run, and catch up with my fellow runners.

The route changed from what we ran last year. We were no longer starting at Kindleberger Park, but now at the Parchment United Methodist Church. The route still included hills, but I had not gotten the chance to preview the course.

At 8:30 am we started the race and I started off a good fast pace like I had wanted and we headed down Riverview Dr. for about a 1/2 mile before we turned down Devon St. which was about a 60 ft. change in elevation. I powered up the hill and then resumed by pace. We had a long downhill just a short while later and then headed up the back portion of Kindleberger park which was another steady uphill.

We headed down the side streets of Parchment for a while and I was sticking with a couple of runners that were near me. They didn't have the mile markers marked on the course, but I started tailing off just a bit near the end of the race. Most of the last mile was flat and downhill, but we had to run up Church St. which was slightly uphill.

After that it was downhill to the finish and I sprinted as hard as I could. I crossed the line with a time of 19:51 good for 17th overall and 2nd in my age group.

I now have a couple of weeks off before I hit the racing circuit again on Aug. 2nd when I travel to Otsego for the Ready or Not 5K.
