Don't Dis My Healthy Sardines

When I was a kid, I remember sharing some sardines with my Grandpa while we watched Wild, Wild West on TV. I figured if he was eating them they must be okay. I realized later in life that he paired his sardines with alcohol, which I admit is a nice combo. It was always pretty dark, which also helped, so I couldn't really see what I was eating. All that led me on the path of enjoying sardines, which are incredibly good for you. As you mull over a sardine purchase in your future, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) They're not as contaminated with pollutants such as mercury and PCBs as other fish because they're small and unfortunately for the sardine, on the bottom of the food chan.

2) They promote hair growth and shine. They help with cancer prevention, help keep your heart healthy and boost your immune system.

3) They are packed with calcium and vitamin D, something very few of us get enough of in the Winter.

4) And they're loaded with vitamin B12, B2, B6 and Omega 3.

Choose sardines packed in olive oil when you can and try not to spill on your shirt or pants. They do smell like sardines, after all!
