KALAMAZOO, MI -- Western Michigan announced on Monday afternoon a home-and-home series against Georgia Southern in 2015-16. The Broncos head to Statesboro, Ga., on Sept. 12, 2015 with a return trip to Kalamazoo on Sept. 24, 2016.
"We pride ourselves on facing elite competition at Western Michigan and that tradition continues with the Georgia Southern series beginning in 2015. The Georgia Southern University football program has six FCS National titles on its resume' and Coach [Jeff] Monken leads a group of fine young men in Statesboro as the Eagles make the transition into the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference," commented Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck.
GSU is set to officially become a part of the Sub Belt Conference during the 2014 season, not eligible for a post-season bowl game until the 2015 season. Georgia Southern will not host an FBS opponent at Paulson Stadium as an FBS member until the Broncos come to town in 2015.
The Eagles have won six FCS national titles in their history, winning back-to-back championships in 1999-2000, 1989-90 and 1985-86. Georgia Southern finished national runners-up in 1998 and 1988.
Georgia Southern is the seventh team that Western Michigan has played during its 108 varsity seasons to have won a Division I-AA/FCS national championship, holding a combined 39-16-1 record against those teams.
The first ever meeting between WMU and Georgia Southern will be the second game of the 2015 season after the Broncos open the campaign at home against Michigan State on Sept. 4. As of now, the other non-conference game on the 2015 schedule is Ohio State on Sept. 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
