KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Western Michigan hockey completed the weekend sweep of their first National Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent with a 5-1 victory over Colorado College Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena.
Dennis Brown pumped up the 3,284 in attendance with the opening score of the game. Brown stuffed home a feed from Jordan Osterle and Shane Berschbach 13:15 into the game giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
Western Michigan out shot the Tigers 11-1 in the opening frame.
Senior Captain Chase Balisy opened the scoring 1:45 into the second period lighting the lamp on a rebound from Nolan LaPorte and Colton Hargrove for his first goal of the season to put Western Michigan up 2-0. Three minutes later, Josh Pitt hammered a feed from Justin Kovacs and Shane Berschbach past Tiger netminder Josh Thorimbert for his second score of the year.
Colorado College outshot Western Michigan 20-7 in the middle frame, and finished with the 29-24 shots on goal advantage for the game. Both teams were scoreless on a combined six power play chances.
The Tigers got on the board at the 14:02 mark of the second when Scott Wamsganz snuck a blooper shot past Frank Slubowski. Western Michigan would answer 21 seconds later courtesy of Justin Kovacs who scored his second goal of the weekend giving the Broncos a 4-1 lead.
Colton Hargrove tallied the final score just 1:17 into the final period, capitalizing on a feed from Chase Balisy and Jordan Osterle.
Frank Slubowski finished with 28 saves Saturday, and 57 for the weekend. Tiger goalie Josh Thorimbert was pulled in the third period and finished with 14 saves. Courtney Lockwood was 5 for 5 on the night.
The Broncos will host Northern Michigan next weekend starting on Saturday November 9th. Face off is 7 pm with a 5 pm start on Sunday.
