KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Behind its third shorthanded goal of the weekend, Western Michigan hockey completed the sweep of the Miami RedHawks with a 3-2 victory in front of 3,826 at Lawson Ice Arena Saturday night.
Chase Balisy got the Broncos on the board first when he ripped a shorthanded goal past Miami netminder Jay Williams at the at the 2:01 mark of the period for his fourth goal of the year.
Western Michigan’s penalty kill was put to the test once again, stopping three RedHawk power plays on seven shots in the first period alone. Miami finished 0-for-8 with 16 shots on the power play while the Broncos were 0-for-4 with two shots.
Junior goaltender Frank Slubowski was stellar, recording 36 saves on the night.
At the 17:52 mark of the middle frame, Taylor Fleming lit the lamp with the go-ahead goal on a slapshot from the point. His first career goal put the Broncos up 2-1. Nolan LaPorte netted the game-winner at the 4:46 mark of the final frame, stuffing a feed from Chase Balisy past Williams for his seventh score of the season.
Miami scored late in the third with Riley Barber’s second goal of the night.
Western Michigan (11-8-3/5-5-0 NCHC) travels to St. Cloud State January 17th and 18th. Both games are set for 8 pm.
