Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – Shayne Whittington scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds as the Western Michigan University Broncos held on to defeat the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 73-69 Sunday at University Arena.
The Broncos big man started off on a tear, scoring 17 points and hauling in 10 boards in the first half to propel WMU to a 40-26 halftime lead.
WMU led by as much as 20 early in the second half, but the Bulldogs never backed down, cutting the lead to single digits with 10:13 left, and got as close as 67-66 with 1:37 remaining. And while the Broncos as team shot only 20-38 from the free throw line, it was two clutch free throws from David Brown with 24 seconds left to seal the victory.
Arthur Capers had a game-high 23 points for the Bulldogs. Brown had 21 points for WMU (3-1).
Western Michigan next takes on North Dakota State on Wednesday night at University Arena. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
