Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – The starting five for the Western Michigan men’s basketball team all scored in double figures and combined for 94 points, as the Broncos beat the Horizon League’s Oakland Grizzles 99-88 on Tuesday night at University Arena.
The high scoring game was fueled by a combined 58 fouls and 73 foul shot attempts and left the Broncos one point shy of their first 100 point game against a Division one opponent since 2008 against Buffalo, a double-overtime affair.
David Brown led the way for Western, setting a new career high in points scored with 31. Brown, the reigning MAC 6th Man of the Year, has scored over 20 points in his last three games and four of six games this season, while increasing his season average to 22.5 per game.
The Broncos (4-2) started on fire out of the gate, scoring the first 11 points before the Grizzles could get on the board. But the Grizzles fought back to take the lead by as much as eight, even without the help of their leading scorer Travis Bader, who picked up three quick fouls and was limited to only seven first half minutes.
However, Oakland (0-7) couldn’t keep the lead for long. The Broncos closed out the first half on a 17-2 run to regain the lead and entered the locker-room with a 49-39 halftime advantage.
WMU extended its lead to 15 at 56-41 with 17:39 remaining in the game and while Oakland chipped away at the lead, could never get the game closer than nine points.
