Toledo, OH (WKZO) – The Toledo Rockets went on a 12-2 run over the last three minutes of regulation and outscored Western Michigan by 11 in overtime to defeat the Broncos 96-85 on Saturday night.
The Broncos led for the entire first half, except for a brief tie game at seven, before Toledo took its first lead 77-75 with 43 seconds left, but two Tucker Haymond free throws with 34 seconds left tied the game and the two Mid-American West rivals went to overtime.
In overtime, the Rockets scored the first five points and never looked back to pull even with the Broncos for the MAC West lead and the overall lead in the MAC along with Buffalo.
David Brown scored 29 for the Broncos (19-9, 12-4 MAC) and Shayne Whittington recorded his fifth straight double-double, tying a WMU program record, with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
The loss snapped the Broncos eight game winning streak.
Tucker Haymond chipped in with 14 for the Broncos, who led 45-33 at halftime and shot 53.6% from the field, while recording assisted on 17 of 30 made shots.
All five Toledo starts scored in double-figures with Justin Drummond leading the way with 28.
The Broncos have two remaining regular season games before the MAC Tournament in Cleveland in two weeks. WMU returns to University Arena on March 4th against Ball State and end the regular season on Friday, March 7th at Central Michigan. Tip off for both games is at 7pm.
