  • Those Were the Days

I know it's been an abandoned eyesore for over a decade, but last night when I drove past the pile of rubble that had once been the best bar EVER - THE RUSH INN- in Mattawan, I shed a tear.

At the risk of sounding like a Toby Keith song, I love this bar.  I have so many memories of the live music ( I love you , Los Bandits!), the dancing, "Slick" the bartender, the softball players, the awesome chicken sandwiches, and especially Santa throwing things down to the kids from the roof on Christmas Eve.

I don't know what the plan is for that plot of land, but it can never be as cool as THE RUSH INN.

  • Take a Vow

"I will never, ever as long as I live text and drive again."

This morning we learned about an ititiative from AT&T and MDOT to get people (not just teenagers) to stop texting and driving.  The dangers are obvious but we're addicted to our DEVICES.

    It's not worth it.

    Stop.

    Take the vow.

  • Let's Make it GREATER!

Kalamazoo is getting a lot of attention for being a great place for kids.  Let's make it GREATER!

For the past several weeks, Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo has been telling the WKZOlisteners how they can help make The Kalamazoo Promise come true for all the students in KPS.  Free college doesn't mean a thing if you can't get INTO college.

TUTORS!  CALLING ALL TUTORS!!  There are so many ways you can help by just investing ONE HOUR A WEEK.

I hope you'll join me in signing up to be a tutor this year.  We'll have an informational meeting Thursday, September 20 from 4:30-6:30 in the auditiorium at Kalamazoo Central. I'm going to do it!  I hope you will, too.  Just think if we all pitch in what a difference it could make.

Come and get the scoop on the 20th and consider becoming a part of "The Lori Moore Corps".  Let's help achieve the goal of making Kalamazoo --EDUCATION CITY

  • Raising Dough Part Deux

The friends and fans of legendary Kalamazoo baker Judy Sarkozy raised $25,000 toward her "comeback" last weekend at a star-studded concert.

The next event in the "RAISING DOUGH" series is coming up Sunday, September 30. We'll be taking over Bell's Brewery for the afternoon from noon to 4:00 for family friendly fun featuring great music by The Out of Favor Boys and The Red Sea Pedestrians.  I'll be your emcee for the live auction portion of the proceedings.  There'll be lots of great packages to bid on.

Suggested donation is $15 for "An Afternoon at Bell's".  Put it on your calendar and let's help put Judy back in business after her devastating fire last winter.

I hope to see a large crowd tonight at Bronson Park for a beautiful program to honor those whose lives were lost on "September 11th".  I'll emcee, Matt Giraud will sing The National Anthem and we'll hear from a number of speakers including a man who experienced the horrors of The World Trade Center first hand.

Please join us at 6:00 on what will be a lovely evening in downtown Kalamazoo.

  • Preventing Falls

    Posted by Lori Moore

Waking up in the 40's is a bit of a shock to the system.  Fall is coming and there's no preventing it.

But there's a different kind of fall that the folks at Seniors Helping Seniors are trying to prevent: home falls.

Sharon George told the WKZO listeners this morning that Seniors Helping Seniors is providing free home assessments to look for in-home dangers and make safety recommendations to seniors in the Kalamazoo area.

If this would help you or someone you love, call 668-2355 to make your appointment.

I just read Jim McKinney's blog and couldn't agree more with what he said about friend to many, Dexter Andrews (Bill Anthony).  It's a crazy little world this radio world and he is my radio brother. I worked with Dexter at WKMI and at WKZO.  What a great guy.  I never saw him in a bad mood.  He is one of those people who just has CHARISMA.  He is so special. I know the power of positive thinking when done en masse. I am wishing for a recovery for him and strength for his family.
