There were so many reasons to swell with Michigan pride this weekend:

Congrats to Kalamazoo's Kevin VanDam!  The all-time leading money winner on the BASS circuit won the 2010 Bassmaster Classic in Alabama this weekend.

The USA hockey team stunned Canada in a 5-3 win last night.  3 Michigan players were instrumental in the win: Ryan Miller, a former Spartan...Brian Rafalski a Red Wing and Dearborn native, and Livonia's Ryan Kesler.

Ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White are in medal contention tonight in the 2010 Olympics.  And the University of Michigan's other team, Samuelson and Bates kicked off the competition last night.

  • Haiti Relief

It may have fallen from the national headlines, but the earthquake in Haiti is still top of mind for many Kalamazoo area people who continue to help.

This morning we heard from Kathleen Tosco, governor of Rotary District 6360 and the water filtration efforts of Rotarians worldwide.  We were serenaded by folksinger, Joel Mabus who is headlining a benefit concert for International Child Care, a Christian charity that has been running a Grace Children's Hospital in Haiti since 1976.  Joel told us that the hospital is cracked in half, but still operating.

The concert will be at KVCC Lake Auditorium Saturday night @ 7:30.  Suggested donation $20.  Tickets available at the door.

If someone asked you who the top selling musical group of the past decade was, you could guess for hours and not get it right.

The Recording Industry Association of America released its compilation of gold and platinum certifications from 2000 to 2009.  It includes albums, digital songs, music videos and ringtones.

Care to take a stab at it?

THE EAGLES!  You heard me...THE EAGLES!!!  The "Hotel California"/"Take it Easy"/"Desperado" guys.  They had 48 certifications.  This past decade!  And they were originally popular in the 70's.  This blows my mind.

Beyonce' was top artist with 64.  Michael Jackson was also a big seller with 44.

You can't hide your lyin' eyes.  You're shocked, too.

Is that how you spell the "raspberry" sound?  The usually lovely and ladylike Governor Jennifer Granholm let a spirited raspberry rip this morning when I asked her about lottery money for the schools.  HA!  I really didn't expect to have anything to laugh about while discussing the budget for the upcoming year.

Hey!  Congratulations to Sadie the Scottish Terrier, winner of "Best in Show" at the Westminster Dog Show.  Sadie is a resident of Mackinac Island!  A Michigan doggie wins!  Whoo hoo!

I hope Ms. Vonn's shin holds up tonight.  I can't wait to see the skiing.  She is one disciplined dame.  Did you watch the curling yesterday?  You know...Kalamazoo is going to be "curling central" in March.  Be listening to 590KZO for details.

WHOO HOO!  Enjoy Fat Tuesday.  Eat your paczki.  And then STOP!  Mardi Gras ends at midnight tonight and then the pious season of Lent begins.  I don't want to hear about any Mardi Gras celebrations after today.  DON'T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE!  I will be issuing citation for infractions.  Please bring any Mardi Gras miscreants to my attention @

I can't wait for the Olympic Opening Ceremonies!  If you watch the NBC coverage, take note of the bearer of the US flag.  He's Mark Grimmette, a Muskegon luger who has been in FIVE Olympics.  Thanks to 24 Hour News 8 sports director Jack Doles for joining us this morning to talk about athletes to watch.  There are a lot of Michigan ties with the Winter Olympics including a number of Detroit Red Wings who will be competing for different countries.

  • Go Away

Feel free to add to the list:

Alec Baldwin - He was in the news today after his daughter called 911 because he threatened to take a hand full of pills after they argued.  Will that poor girl grow up to be the biggest mess EVER?

John Mayer - Every time I turn around he's in the news for some offensive remarks he made in an interview.  He loves to "kiss and tell"; Jennifer Anniston...Jessica Simpson....He also made some racially insensitive remarks to "Playboy" under the guise of trying to be "intellectual".  GO AWAY!  I guess he was trying to make he moves on Taylor Swift and her mom said the same thing.  Ha!  And ICK.

  • 211 Helpline Event

Did you know there is a number to call to get the answers to any number of questions you might have about social services?  It's The Griffin Place 211 line. Tomorrow morning we'll be telling you all about this great service.  Midday and afternoon, Richard Piet and Jay Morris will be at The Greenery in Richland raising money to keep the helpline going.

We'll also keep you posted on any remaining weather related problems.  Talk to you 6-10!

Batten down the hatches!  12" of snow is possible by Wednesday.  Richard and I will have all your school closings and cancellations for you and our "traffic tipsters" will keep you posted on all the accidents and delays Wednesday morning from 6-10am.

If you never believed in miracles before, this may change your mind:

Nearly a MONTH after the Haitian earthquake, a 29 year old man was pulled from the rubble ALIVE.  He says someone brought him water while he was trapped.  Doctors aren't sure if he was hallucinating, but say it wouldn't be possible to have survived without it.  Wow.

  • We're not THAT bad...

Maybe the advertisers who spend enormous dollars on advertising on THE SUPER BOWL should consider that women watch too.  I hate to sound like a bra-burner, but how many commercials last night featured hen-pecked, *****-whipped, emasculated guys who were saved by a portable t.v. or a Dodge Charger?

We're really not that bad, we gals.  Really!

  • Thanks

I want to thank everyone for their wonderful support throughout my "predicament". Every card I received means so much.  It warms my heart that so many people took time out of their schedules to sign the "big" cards, too.

I'm coming along, the prognosis is positive and I start treatments in March. Goofing around with Richard and Tim is my favorite part of the day.  We're so glad you're listening.

    Thanks for caring.  Lori
