  • Atta Way Maroon Giants!

Congratulations to the Kalamazoo Central men's basketball team who took home the Class A State Championship on Saturday.  This morning we talked with principal Von Washington, Jr. and Kalamazoo Mayor (and proud alum) Bobby Hopewell who said they'll be getting together with KPS Superintendant Michael Rice regarding a possible community celebration.  Stay tuned!

  • Get well, Richard!

Sheesh!  We made it through winter with a relatively uneventful flu season and now everyone I know is sick; coughing and sneezing their heads off.

It's not just me.  Thanks to Greg Ayers for passing along an article from the Chicago Sun-Times about how Illinois TOTALLY ripped off the "Pure Michigan" campaign.  I suggested yesterday that we sue them for copyright infringement and use the millions to fund our own financially beleaguered but critically acclaimed campaign. When you see one of their t.v. ads you will be stunned by the blatant thievery.

We started out in the teens today, but Accuweather meteorologist, Elliot Abrams promises 60's ...maybe even 70's (!)...by next weekend.

  • WHOA!

This just in: Geoffrey Fieger told WOOD-TV 8 that he's considering another run for governor.  Fieger was the Democratic candidate back in 1998 when he lost to John Engler.  The successful Southfield attorney was a frequent guest on 590KZO and was NEVER boring.  Wow.  He said he's examining the documents to run and then may have his head examined, too. If he runs as a Democrat, he'll be up against Virg Bernero, Andy Dillon and Alma Wheeler.

After a marathon surgery yesterday, my brother Greg received a new heart.  Thank you to everyone who has prayed for our family.  And thank you to the family who made the donation possible.  My family has been on the donor end of the equation and we know how heartbreaking that is. The knowledge that your loved one was able to save another life does help in the time of sorrow. If you haven't signed up yet to be a donor, please consider doing it today.  It's easy.  You just go to the Michigan Secretary of State website and fill out a short form.  You'll receive a heart sticker to affix to your license.  You , too, could help save a life.

  • King Hwy? Kings Hwy?

    Posted by Lori Moore

Okay.  At least I know I'm not crazy.  Having grown up here, people always called THAT ROAD Kings Highway with an "s".  All of a sudden it became KING--no "s". What gives?  Many listeners weighed in on the subject this morning.  It was named after the King Paper Mill.  M-DOT says the official name is KING HIGHWAY, but Nick Shirrippa who is from around here, says he always heard it as KINGS, too!  HA!  So he says that I get to decide. Hmmmmmm......

Thank you to everyone who has been praying for my brother Greg since last May when he suffered an aeortic aneurism.  He's been on the transplant list WAITING. They got the call overnight that a heart is ready and he's in surgery as I type this. Keep prayin'!

  • Help for Abused Kids

    Posted by Lori Moore

This morning I was joined by a woman who has been working tirelessly on behalf of abused children for many years - Barbara Ciuffa.  She talked about the sorry state of mental health in this state.

She offered a number of ways to help:

Kalamazoo County Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Council - 552-4430

    Family and Children's Services 373-0248

Jane Mansager Memorial Trust Fund 385-6047

Kalamazoo County Department of Human Services 337-5252

You can make contributions to any of the above agencies and it could make a difference in children's lives.

  • MEN!

Oh nice.  Now, Sandra Bullock has left her biker husband after waxing poetic about him in every interview she's done over the past year.  She gazed lovingly at him as she accepted her Oscar.  He sat there with tears in his eyes.  Well the Oscar afterglow was VERY short-lived. She moved out after finding out he's been having a year long affair with a "model".  His last wife was a porn star.  She's been helping raise his kid while porn star rots in jail.  It's a lovely scenario.  I guess she thought she "changed" him.  A tiger doesn't change his stripes.

Annoying voice.  Lacey Brown was sent packing on "Idol" last night.  Adorable girl. Great styling.  But I think America got it right when they sent her home last night. Paige will be next.

I was shocked that they brought back the "save" feature this year.  Of course it worked out well for Kalamazoo's Matt Giraud last year, but it is just really, really uncomfortable seeing someone who has been voted off by viewers have to "sing to be saved".  How humiliating! I get why they do it, but I don't like it.  I don't like to be uncomfortable.  That's why I skip the whole audition phase.  I hope they retire it along with Simon Cowell.

  • Wonderful People

One of my favorite Potluck Palanthropists, Art Roberts gave me a button that I wear on my bathrobe: CANCER SUCKS.  It does.  But let me tell you, there have been some real positive moments in this whole adventure.  Today I was presented with a beautiful, handmade quilt made by the late Diana Dean of the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church's "Prayers and Squares Ministry".  Every knot on the quilt represents a prayer that was said for the recipient.  What a beautiful thing they do for people in times of trauma!  Thank you to Jim Dean, Anita Balgenorth, and all the wonderful people at Schoolcraft United Methodist Church for caring about me.

And I ain't talkin' basketball.  What is with Mother Nature?  She is very confused. Talked with the good folks at Boyne Mt. who are gearing up for the big party weekend this weekend and they told me that they lost 2 feet of base in 2 days.  It's pretty bare up there.  But I saw crocuses...croci?...over the weekend.  Not the little green shoots but the actual FLOWERS!  It was a sight for sore eyes.  My lawn went from snow covered to brown to bright green in about 48 hours. Accuweather meteorologist, Elliot Abrams says to expect mild weather all week long.  ENJOY!

  • Baby Slings

    Posted by Lori Moore

If you were listening this morning, you may have heard a blood-curdling 911 call from a mother whose baby died while swaddled in one of those baby slings.  They are really popular and it was felt that the baby thrived on the close contact with the mom or dad.  What is the new advice given these developments?  We'll learn on Monday when we talk with Deb Carpenter of the Bronson Safe Kids Coalition.

Roseanne Barr is blaming the Mormon Church for the suicide death of Marie Osmond's son. On her website, the outspoken comedienne suggested that the church's anti-gay position drove Michael Blosil to his death.  She wrote, "Marie Osmond's poor gay son killed himself.  He had been told how wrong and sick he was every day of his life by his church and the people in it.  Calling it depression is a lie."BOOM.  She later expressed sympathy for Marie Osmond, calling her the most open minded person in her whole family."
