  • Driving and Texting Ban

    Posted by Lori Moore

Well, I guess we have about 12 hours to figure out what the new driving and texting ban means.  Depending on whom you ask, you either CAN or CAN'T text while stopped.

Betsy sent me the link for an ap that allows you to listen to your text messages while driving.  For purposes of on-air "schtick" I asked Sam to put the a male voice on my Droid, because I wanted him to send me a "SEXT" message that would air on the radio.  There were 2 voice choices: "free female" and "PREMIUM MALE" that you got with the paid version!  BITE ME!

How do you remove an ap?

I will be following closely a sex discrimination lawsuit by a former Citibank employee who claims she was fired because she was too attractive.  Debrahlee Lorenzana claims she was targeted by male colleagues who complained that her beauty was a distraction.

That's certainly been my experience.  Guys HATE it when there are attractive women around.

I laud Tim, Richard, Sam, Roger, Jay, Elliot, Sean, and all my other male co-workers for buckling down and getting the job done in spite of the distraction of working with me each day.

  • A Plug Away Thursday Success Story

    Posted by Lori Moore

A couple of weeks ago, a generous lady called and said that she had a beautiful piano that she wanted to donate to a non-profit organization.  I immediately thought of our POTLUCK PALS "The Crescendo Academy of Music" (one of our recipients of last year's cookbook) and gave them a call.  I got an email from Executive Director, Audrey Lipsey who said that the piano will be delivered today!

    I love a happy ending!

PLUG AWAY THURSDAY can be heard Thursday mornings between 9:00 and 10:00 am on 5909/96.5 WKZO.  Call with your promotional announcements and get some free advertising: 382-4280 & 877-382-4280.

Join me today from 4-7 at the brand new Borgess ProMed Physicians Family Practice in Mattawan. I'll be a part of The Jay Morris Show telling you about this family-focused health center @ 24466 Red Arrow Highway.

On Wednesday, I'll be in Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo for MATCH DAY. This is really cool.  The Kalamazoo Community Foundation is celebrating 85 years of philanthropy by matching donations to many area non-profits 50 cents on the dollar up to $170,000!

By the way...congratulations to the "army" of volunteers who helped The Salvation Army put together 620,784 meals for the people of Haiti over the weekend.  Way to go!

  • TGIF

    Posted by Lori Moore

And I do mean TGIF.  Sheesh!  The news was even more depressing than usual today.  Whenever the gory details are provided about a death penalty execution, I plug my ears.  Today was unbearable with the firing squad story.  Grizzly.  Barbaric. Disgusting.

Then there was the idiot in Texas who apologized TO BP.  You have got to be kidding me.

And the poor guy who ran over his own child pulling out of the garage.

I'm so glad it's the weekend.  I love my job, but I'm going to take a little break from the news for a few days.

  • Oh Dear

    Posted by Lori Moore

There are those that think a Democrat doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being elected governor in the next election.  There are only 2 being touted as viable candidates right now: Lansing mayor Virg Bernero and House Speaker Andy Dillon.

The Detroit News is reporting that Dillon is running t.v. ads with the theme "HIRE MICHIGAN FIRST"....and the commercials were done by a CHICAGO ad agency! When asked about it, his representative said that there weren't any agencies of that caliber in Michigan.

REALLY? Can anyone be that clueless?  Unbelievable.

  • Make a Million

    Posted by Lori Moore

Did you know that The Salvation Army distributes one million meals in Haiti each week?  It's Kalamazoo's turn to make it happen.  Volunteers are gathering this Saturday and Sunday at the old Sam's Club location to assemble dried ingredients.

Major Don Tekautz says that they only have 1,000 of the 3,500 volunteers needed to make their goal.

They'll have jobs for every age and ask for a minimum 2 hour commitment. You can register for a shift by calling  344-6119 or visiting www.tsakalamazoo.org.

    Can you help?

  • Really? In America?

    Posted by Lori Moore

This morning when I was going through my "show prep" I thought, "The time has come. I need reading glasses."  I was looking over a CBS report about convicted murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner who is scheduled to be put to death on Friday in Utah for killing two people.

If his appeal is denied, he will executed by FIRING SQUAD.  You heard me: FIRING SQUAD.  He will be strapped to a chair, a hood pulled over his head, and a target placed over his heart, and he will be shot to death.  His choice, by the way. He could have gone for lethal injection.

This is just gross and demented- even for Utah- from which some of our nation's most disturbing stories come.

My eyesight is fine.  My faith in humanity not so much.

  • A Waste of Time?

Is it just a p.r. ploy on the part of B.P.?  This morning, our "Bird Watch" host Roger Taylor talked about the futility of trying to clean all those poor birds down in the Gulf Region.  He said that while he was torn on the subject, studies have shown that those birds who have been washed and relocated have only a 1% chance of survival and that we're prolonging their agony since most will die anyway from ingesting oil after trying to clean themselves.  Some bird advocates say that euthanasia would be more humane.

You can hear the interview by clicking on the podcast at WKZO.COM.

You can hear "Bird Watch" Saturday mornings @ 8:00 on 590/96.5 WKZO.

  • WHOOPS!

    Posted by Lori Moore

I know that Delta bought out Northwest Airlines and it's a whole new world, but I find it SHOCKING that Delta accidentally put unaccompanied minors on the wrong flights. My daughter did that program on NWA a few times when she was smaller.  You pay DEARLY for the "supervision" that your child receives (especially when there is a conncecting flight as there was in this situation). Ask any parent who has done this, and they'll tell what they got for their money: zip.

I found the whole "kids flying solo" situation kind of depressing.  While Emma was off to see grandparents and an uncle, most of the kids I saw at the airport seemed rather seasoned having to shuttle between divorced parents.

This is huge money for the airlines.  Get it together, Delta.

  • What's in a Name?

Today's top story: It was a big day for women in a number of primaries across the country.  My favorite name is Senator Blanche Lincoln from Arkansas.  Isn't that fabulous?  Doesn't that sound grand?

And then there's the guy she'll run against...GOP candidate John Boozman.  Oh dear.
